One Week Later: Arrow 3x11 'Midnight City' Review
Guess who needs to start posting these episode reviews earlier? This writer does. I haven't quite failed the city but I have failed these blog posts. Arrow continues a hot streak of episodes as Oliver Queen remains in hiding and Brick begins his takeover of The Glades.
Roy and Laurel get the spotlight in an episode that seems to have fans divided. I'm aware some fans have even dropped the show due to Laurel becoming the new Canary because it's not believable that she would become a superhero in such short time. Here's the thing... she really isn't.
Just look at the way Laurel fights. She's terrible. The show is acknowledging that she can't become a superhero overnight. She has to earn her status as a fighter just like every other character. That's good writing. Naturally, for every five things this season of Arrow is doing so, so right, it's getting other aspects so, so wrong.
Will someone please tell Captain Lance his daughter is dead? For fucks sake, man. This isn't heroic whatsoever. What is the purpose of this? Even if Sara comes back from the dead with the assistance of the Lazarus Pit and they never tell Captain Lance, what does that do? The show has said Lance has a heart problem in the aftermath of the previous season's finale. Ray Palmer is going to become a man who can shrink like Ant-Man. I can put aside disbelief a little for some actual positive changes for the season.
On another negative note, I hope we get a more concrete answer to Oliver's resurrection sooner or later. If the whole answer is just brushed under the rug like it was here, I will continue to complain. I don't need anything realistic, just sell it in a world where a man can run at the speed of light and sound. Give me something concrete!
Besides those little bits, there's not much to hinder my enjoyment of this episode.
I do still wish more time had passed for before Brick's takeover of The Glades. Vinnie Jones has a great presence and like Peter Stormare as Count Vertigo earlier in the season, he's a modern icon when it comes to character actors. WAIT. What if we got Vertigo and Brick in the same episode building a criminal empire? It doesn't even have to be this season. Just make it happen down the line. It's too good of an opportunity to pass up.
Ray Palmer is still busy setting his suit up to do... something. He's a welcome presence on the screen but hopefully he does something proactive with the suit sooner than later.
Roy is becoming almost leading man material. His place in the spotlight is growing more and more, as the writers had him confront Merlyn for what he's done to Thea. He might not be keeping Starling City as safe as Oliver was but he's always standing up for what is right now. That's a hero.
I'm really enjoying this Canary trilogy thus far. And now it looks like it's about to go down as The Glades fight back against Brick and his army of thugs. And now the DJ isn't a useless subplot anymore! Thank the lord almighty. I thought we were going into season 1 territory with meaningless romance subplots. It's a little hokey to have him be connected to the League of Assassins. I rolled my eyes and sighed in relief simultaneously. Let's see where this goes tonight.
